Breaking down barriers this #GivingTuesday!

November 28, 2017

Did you know that when individuals actively participate in their own education, they are more motivated to learn, and thereby are more successful?!?!

What is a SMARTBoard… It’s essentially a whiteboard you can write on, and that also acts like an iPad.  You can use your finger to engage the projected images, similar to a computer or iPad function and use special pens to draw, write or highlight right on top of what you are seeing to engage learners.

Why use a SMARTBoard?  With this tool, our staff can more effectively engage the individuals we support by offering varying learning styles that encourage the strengths of the person they are working with including tactile, auditory, and visual thus providing new and exciting ways to meet their goals.

SMARTBoards provide Improved Learning. Variation is the key to successful learning.  While some students are auditory learners, absorbing information efficiently through the spoken word, others are visual learners and must see things to really understand what is being presented, while some others prefer touch based activities to retain new information.  All of these methods are able to be utilized.

SMARTBoards provide Increased Participation. There are no barriers to participation with this type of technology.  Individuals with any level of mobility or skill level can access and use this board to meet the needs of their chosen goal.

SMARTBoards provide Enhanced Collaboration.  Inclusion is paramount in our world.  Individuals we support can work together to meet goals and support each other as well as engage volunteer members of the community to bring new innovative programs never before available to be offered.

You can help. Today, November 29 is #GivingTuesday, a national day of giving that brings Canadians together to make the world a better place.

Help inspire possibilities today! From now until midnight on #GivingTuesday, when you donate to Community Living St. Catharines, your gift will be put toward the purchase of a SMARTBoard for our new classroom in the Community Living Center at 79 Welland Avenue.

Our goal today is $6,500.00…                                      With your help, we can do it!

Thank you for helping to make a positive impact on many of the lives of those with intellectual disabilities.
